Pont-Aven Museum: The “Witches” Exhibition Captivates Visitors

There are some exhibitions that leave a lasting impression. The “Sorcières” exhibition at the Musée de Pont-Aven is definitely one of them. I had the pleasure of experiencing it recently, and it was a powerful moment—both aesthetically striking and emotionally charged.

As you move through the galleries, you retrace an entire chapter of women’s history through striking works—some intimate, others spectacular. Among them, one piece made a particularly strong impression on me: Edgar Maxence’s monumental work “La Légende bretonne.” Presented here in Pont-Aven, it resonates in a very special way.

But what makes this exhibition so moving is the way it rehabilitates the figures of women who have long been marginalized or stigmatized, restoring their voices, presence, and power. All of this is presented through a curatorial approach that is as beautiful as it is respectful.

Through the theme of the witch, the exhibition raises the question of how women are viewed in a patriarchal society—a perspective that is, sadly, still all too relevant today. This exhibition resonates with our times and offers an artistic journey that is as necessary as it is inspiring.
